The Empty Chair tells the story of Matheo, a highly intelligent Grade 11 student whose frequent absences conceal the financial hardships he faces while working to support his family. Despite exhaustion and limited time, Matheo remains academically excellent through determination and disciplined study. Recognizing that poverty should not force him to choose between education and family responsibilities, his teacher, Mrs. Santos, helps him secure a student-assistant position and tutoring opportunities within the school. With this support, Matheo is able to continue earning while attending classes regularly and ultimately graduates with distinction. The story highlights how perseverance, compassion, and meaningful educational support can empower students facing socioeconomic challenges to overcome adversity and pursue a better future.
